This was a commission for a shop in the town centre. The only demand was that LED lighting could be incorporated into it. The design was layed out on the floor from broken up pallets, 8 in all.
The important aspect was a feeling of depth and as it’s made from pallets the size of the boards were restricted to 120cm lengths.
It was a case of make it up as you go along. Trial and error.
The horizontal boards came from extra large shipping pallets and were cut to length.
All edges were bevelled with a hand plane.
The basic frame was boarded on the back and a shelf was incorporated to allow for displays. Later the bottom part of the front was also boarded out.
So as to cover up the lights and to give an illumination affect it was decided to incorporate up side down picket fence detail with a 1 cm reduction in length from each end to the middle thus giving the arch.
At first decorative sides were cut for the back shelving but this was deemed unsuitable as the display bed sheets would be visible so straight sides were cut and all edges were routed half round to eliminate sharp edges. All corners were cut with a jig saw so as again to avoid sharp parts.
A display shelf was added to the top and a base shelf at the bottom.
All was left now was to apply three coats of matt white paint and install the LED lighting.
The final result installed in the shop.
As seen from behind with the bed sheets placed on the shelving.
For the best effect the shop lights need to be turned off.
