TOWEL RAIL

When I was given eight balustrade pieces and asked to knock up a towel rail I walked away scratching my head but after a nights sleep I came up with a plan.

Blocks and feet.

To give the rack structural stabability it was necessary to glue the parts up using inserted dowels. For the gluing process a jig had to be made so as to ensure everything stayed straight and level.

A complicated process involving a lot of clamps.

Polyurethane expanding glue was used to stick the pieces together.

The trouble is it’s quick setting so you have to move quickly. It of course helps if you do a dry run first to make sure everything fits correctly.

The top of the rack was made from a bed head that was found in the street. Funnily enough the carving on the bead head was very similar to the balustrade.

Two coats of walnut stain were applied and three coats of varnish.

To reinforce the stability of the rack small brackets were screwed onto the top rail.

Once covered with displays you see very little of the actual rack.
